Waterproof Jacket Reviews — A Motorcycle Commuter's Journey

Waterproof Jacket Reviews

As a motorcycle commuter, I often encounter light rain on the way to and from work — heavy enough to get wet, but not quite enough to bother pulling on full rain gear. The dream is one technical jacket that handles both. Here's what I've tried.

2018–2019: Decathlon technical jacket — purchased for around NT$1,000+

Review: Waterproofing was decent the first few months, but deteriorated steadily after that. The pockets let water in while riding, and so did the collar. By about the one-year mark, it had essentially lost all waterproofing in the rain. Retired.

2019–2021: Rab Downpour — worn for roughly 1.5 years

Waterproofing was good for the first six months. Downside: no pocket flap, so water got in while riding. Around the one-year mark I machine-washed it, and the DWR coating peeled off afterward — especially on the hood and collar, which see the most friction. Replaced.

2021–2022: Mont-bell Rain Hiker — purchased for roughly NT$2,000–3,000

Used heavily for about a year and still in rotation, mainly for cold-weather hiking. Excellent breathability; pockets less prone to water ingress. During the first half of the year I wore it daily, and also with a backpack for hikes. The surprise was that the shoulder areas — constantly rubbed by the backpack straps — started letting water through at around the one-year mark. No longer worn for daily commuting.

2022–present: Mont-bell Rain Dancer — my first Gore-Tex jacket, currently in service

Used primarily for commuting; not worn for hiking. Continuing to observe long-term performance. #lifestyle
